Spondylosis (spinal calcification)

A Spondylosis is a pathological change in the spine in older dogs in which calcification and bony connections develop between form the vertebral bodies and stiffen the spine.

The good news in advance: Spondylosis has no influence on how old your dog gets or whether he dies from it. Many dogs can live quite well with this, sometimes even unnoticed by the dog owner.

The bad news: Unfortunately, spondylosis cannot be cured and can lead to pain and secondary symptoms such as osteoarthritis, tremors, lä immobilization and incontinence.

How can you recognize spondylosis?

The initial stage is difficult to recognize. However, if your dog has difficulty standing up, climbing stairs, jumping into the car or arching his back (so-called cat hump), you should pay attention. There is still something you can do to prevent secondary illnesses.

The stiffening of the spine is often accompanied by pain caused by irritation of the periosteum and injured nerves within the spinal cord. As a result of nerve irritation, signal loss, incontinence, paralysis, shaking (tremor) or coordination problems can occur. These symptoms usually subside once the fusion is complete, but that is often a long journey.

Arthrosis can also develop in the vertebral area and in the joints due to the changed gait. If osteoarthritis has already broken out, it cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be made more bearable and progression of the disease can be slowed down. Here too, prevention is the best treatment.

Discopathy - herniated disc with prolapse

The discopathy or wear and tear of the intervertebral discs can lead to a herniated disc in the dog, in which the The intervertebral disc moves towards the spinal canal. If tissue leaks from the intervertebral disc or the fibrous ring into the spinal canal, this is called an intervertebral disc prolapse. The pressure on the nerves in the canal can cause radiating pain, damage the nerves and disrupt signal transmission to organs or muscles, which can lead to neurological deficits.

Please note that VITAL regeneration should be preferred for the prevention of a herniated disc. In the case of a herniated disc without prolapse (tear of the disc with fluid leaking into the spinal canal), the combination of VITAL regeneration and VITAMIN B is recommended, while in the case of a herniated disc with prolapse the combination of JOINTS and VITAMIN B is recommended due to the greater pain - and anti-inflammatory effect is recommended.

The cauda equina syndrome

The main cause of cauda equina syndrome (degenerative lumbosacral stenosis or lumbosacral stenosis) is a herniated disc, usually ;often in connection with a narrow spinal canal (spinal canal stenosis). The syndrome usually occurs in older, medium to large dogs when the bundle of nerves extending from the lower spinal cord is compressed or damaged by a herniated disc.
